Why should I support the West Tennessee Scout Shop?
-
Your dollars stay in West Tennessee to help fund programs for local youth.
-
Our Scout Shops are the largest volume, Council-operated shops in the United States.
-
We serve volunteers from numerous states in our stores, and through telephone and fax orders.
-
Many items we carry are unique and are designed and produced locally, supporting other local businesses.
-
We receive new products on a regular basis, so there are often new products to purchase.
-
We aggressively mark down older items and offer specials frequently that are not available through the BSA National website.
-
We special order any BSA National items that we may not carry with no additional charges to the customer.
Why Cub Scout Uniforms and Handbooks Are Important?
THE UNIFORM
There is a lot of chatter about "why" we place so much emphasis on uniforms. Uniforms serve many purposes.
* Equality. The uniform represents a democratic ideal of equality. Children from various cultures and different economic levels wear the same uniform and cooperate as equals.
* Identification. The uniform identifies a boy or girl as a member of the Cub Scouts. Badges on the uniform tell other members that they belong to their den, pack, and council. The uniform itself identifies a good citizen to the entire community.
* Achievement. The uniform displays badges and other awards so the accomplishments of each Cub Scout can be immediately recognized.
* Commitment. Wearing a uniform is a constant reminder to each Cub Scout of their commitment to the ideals and purposes of Cub Scouting: duty to God, loyalty to country, and helpfulness to others.
Just as you would not send a child out to play any sport in an old pair of shorts and tee shirts, you should not send your child into Scouting without the proper uniform. A uniform identifies youth as part of a group and gives them a sense of belonging.
The Handbook
The Handbook is possibly the most important item that a Cub Scout carries. Do not let anyone tell you the handbook is not important!
* The handbook for Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos Scouts is a road map to where they are going, and exactly how to earn the rank. It gives you the requirements for the rank, and how to accomplish the requirements.
* The handbook provides a vital “tear-out” pamphlet for youth protection. This is critical and is a great tool for each parent to review with their child how to stay safe.
* The handbook is fun to look at and read. It encourages every child to read and enjoy reading.
If you cannot afford a uniform or book, specific assistance is available to help. It may be able to assist you with part of the cost of Scouting. Ask your District Executive for more details.
